Research has found that smoking can trigger hair loss especially in men with a family history of baldness. Genetics play a key role in determining your susceptibility to male pattern baldness. If male members of your family, both maternal and paternal, have receded hairlines or a balding crown, there is a good chance that you may also go bald in your 20s or 30s. And smoking just increases your chances of going bald. If you smoke 20 or more cigarettes a day, and you have a family history of baldness as well, you are a greater risk of premature baldness.

How Does Smoking Cause Hair Loss?

Your hairs grow from small sac like structures called hair follicles. These tiny structures need essential nutrients and minerals as well as an efficient supply of oxygen to function properly. If at any stage, this supply of nutrients and oxygen is stopped or even hampered; their ability to grow hairs gets affected. Nicotine in cigarettes causes the blood vessels to shrink, affecting efficient blood supply to the head. It also hampers blood’s ability to carry oxygen and other essential nutrients to the hair follicles. This disrupts normal hair growth cycle, resulting in more than normal hair loss on daily basis. This ultimately leads to hair thinning and eventual loss.

Besides impairing blood supply to hair follicles and other parts of the body, smoking also affects the immune system. This makes your body more susceptible to different diseases and ailments. Some of these medical conditions can damage hair strands or cause hair loss.
