Shedding hair is part of the natural hair growth cycle. Hair experts have a unanimous opinion that losing up to a hundred strands daily is very much normal as the existing hair fall off to make way for new hair growth. But shedding more than normal amount of hair daily is an indication that you may be suffering from Telogen Effluvium, a type of hair loss in which a person starts losing more than normal amount of hair. This type of hair loss can occur due to numerous reasons, including nutritional deficiencies, stress, anxiety, severe illness and major surgery etc. But the good news is that the hair loss is mostly temporary and hair begins to regrow as soon as the underlying cause is addressed.

Are you also struggling with hair loss? Wondering what exactly causes you lose dozens of hair strands every day? You have come to the right place. Here we will explain you the secret behind hair loss. To know the secret, it is important that you understand different stages of hair growth.

Hair Loss Causes

To help you understand the hair shedding process in a better way, here we will discuss different stages of hair loss or thinning of hair.

Hair Growth Cycle

Studies have shown that hair grows at a rate of half an inch per month (about 0.3-0.4 mm per day). This means that active hairs on the head, and anywhere on the body, are always growing. The hair growth rate, however, varies from person to person, depending upon the individual’s genes, general health, hair care regimen and lifestyle. At any given time the hairs on your head will be in one of the following stages:

  • Anagen
  • Catagen
  • Telogen

Anagen Phase

It is the active phase of the hair growth cycle. The cells of the hair roots divide actively and rapidly to form new hairs. When the formation of club hair is complete, it comes out of the scalp skin and starts normal growth. Anagen phase lasts for two to six years and the hairs grow at an average rate of one centimeter in a month. Your hair length depends primarily on the length of anagen phase. This is why some people have really long hair while others struggle to grow hairs beyond shoulders. Body hairs, eyebrows, eyelashes, chest hair etc. all have short anagen phase and therefore do not grow beyond a certain length.

Catagen Phase

It is the transitional stage in which active hairs prepare to undergo the state of dormancy. Hair growth stops, the follicle begins to shrink to form a hair club and the hair growth completely stops. At any time on average you have 3% of total hair in catagen phase. It is a brief phase that lasts for two to three weeks, before the hair enters the final stage, the Telogen phase.

Telogen Phase

It is the final stage of hair growth cycle. At any time about to 6 to 8 percent of all hairs are in Telogen phase. Formation of club hair has completed in the Telogen phase and it lasts for up to a 100 days. Generally 25 to 100 hairs in Telogen phase fall off every day, the hair shedding which is considered normal by the trichologists.

This is the normal hair growth process that begins with active growth and ends as the hair falls off. But in case of Telogen effluvium the person begins to shed more than normal hairs per day, and it happens because more and more hairs start undergoing Catagen and Telogen phases.
