Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) is a newer, non-surgical hair loss treatment used for treating various types of alopecia. It is most commonly used to treat androgenic alopecia in both men and women. PRP is plasma derived from the blood that has been enriched with platelets. Since PRP is a concentrated source of autologous platelets, it is stuffed with several growth factors with soft tissue and bone healing properties. This tissue healing property of PRP makes it an ideal treatment for repairing damaged hair tissues due to any reason, be it effect of Dihydrotestosterone (DHT) or constant hair pulling (traction alopecia) or any other type of alopecia.
Surgeons have long been using growth factors present in PRP to stimulate healing process after major surgeries, but it was until recently that they started using platelets to strengthen damaged hair follicles and trigger robust, healthy hair growth. Blood sample is taken from the patient and centrifuged in a special apparatus to separate platelets rich plasma. Topical anesthetic is then applied to the scalp to numb it, in a bid to make the procedure virtually painless. PRP is then injected into the areas of the scalp with hair thinning or bare patches, using injection gun. Platelet Rich Plasma boosts the follicular health, repairs damaged hair follicles and triggers hair tissue regeneration. Consequently, you experience significant reduction in hair loss and robust hair growth.
Like most of the other non-invasive cosmetic procedures, PRP treatment for preventing hair loss also requires multiple sessions to deliver desired results. Generally 6 sessions, spaced a couple of weeks apart, are enough to significantly control hair loss and trigger hair regrowth in the affected areas. Exact number of sessions required can be determined only after in-office consultation.
Several studies have been conducted to study effectiveness of PRP therapy for hair loss, and the findings are quite encouraging. To further enhance the efficacy of PRP hair loss treatment, surgeons are no using it in combination with ACell’s MatriStem, a resorbable extracellular matrix that works by strengthening androgenically miniaturized hair follicles. Surgeons also use the ACell/PRP combination to further enhance results of hair transplant surgery. The mixture speeds up the healing process and also strengthens the newly transplanted hair follicles, resulting in guaranteed, healthier hair growth.
